University of Houston marine geologist Julia Wellner, one of the lead investigators of the expedition, first shared the discovery on Twitter on February 11, Nature News reports.Īfter being the first visitors, we can now confirm that Sif Island is made of granite and that it is covered by remnant ice shelf, and a few seals. Earlier this month, the glacier purged an iceberg twice the size of Washington, D.C.īecause ships rarely travel as far south as the Palmer did earlier this month, the crew is likely the first to discover the island. The Pine Island Glacier is one of the fastest-retreating glaciers in Antarctica because it is shedding ice faster than the glacier is expanding outward. The island-named Sif after the goddess of Earth and the wife of thunder god Thor- is big enough for satellites to spot from space but had previously been hidden under ice.Īlthough experts don’t yet know how long the island has been free from its chilly hiding place, climate change is likely to blame for the reveal, per Nature News. Palmer research vessel while passing through the Pine Island Bay, reports Nature News’ Giuliana Viglione. Members of the Thwaites Offshore Research (THOR) project first spotted the uncharted island while completing an expedition aboard the Nathaniel B. Such is the story of how a never-before-seen island emerged off the coast of Antarctica recently. When the latter happens and a glacier quickly sheds ice as the ground rises up, the land underneath maybe start to appear. Sometimes, this effect stabilizes the ice by anchoring it in place, but rebounding ground could accelerate the glacial breakup by causing more cracks. As the glaciers retreat, they release pressure on the continent, allowing the ground itself to rise up. Lucky Peak State Park: Biking, Kayaking and More.We made up this challenge to see a bit more of our beautiful state and help alleviate the restlessness caused by Covid-19 travel restrictions. The challenge consists of visiting all of Idaho’s state parks in one year. We visited Eagle Island State Park as part of our Idaho State Parks Challenge. With the plentiful activities available, there really should be something to entertain everyone. Taking it easy at the Park Conclusionįor $5 per car load (zip line not included), Eagle Island is a great option for families in Boise to get outside. We weren’t dressed for swimming so instead we just put out a blanket and watched as families set up barbecues and splashed around in the beach area. We stopped at a grocery store close to the park and picked up some food for a picnic before entering the park. Our experience(s) at Eagle Island State Park Picnicking at Eagle Island State Park This highway follows the Payette River where you can experience some of Idaho’s famed whitewater rafting. Eagle Island is on the north side of the Treasure Valley and is close to Highway 55.The small town of Eagle is just a few minutes away with grocery stores and restaurants. Boise, Idaho’s capital and largest city, is conveniently located near Eagle Island. The prisoners had moved out several years before. In 1983, Eagle Island State Park was dedicated as a state park. For the next 50 years or so, prisoners lived here and worked on a farm/dairy/slaughterhouse (Crazy, right?!) In 1929, the land was purchased by the Idaho State Board of Prisons. A Little History about Eagle Island State Park With that much room, you can fit in a lot of different ways to recreate. The park is quite large, around 550 acres. Where else can horseback ride, zip line, and go on a waterslide all in one location? It’s a weird conglommeration of activities. In winter this park is still used, but is much less frequented. There is a huge parking lot, but I suspect it gets full on busy days. I recommend you start early or choose late afternoon/evening to avoid the crowds. Finding a place to park may be difficult on the weekends.
